Teachers must know the most of the aspects of children, in all of these aspects every child has the same basic needs of feeling secure and beloved, and we have to transmit them that they are valuable and necessary people that can succeed in all what they point as an aim. Teachers have to be conscious of the different learning rhythms of each child so as to make them feel as better as possible with themselves and their development capacities. A pupil with high confidence in himself or herself will have more chances to achieve the aims and beat up the difficulties in the way. As future teachers we can´t pressure the students, it can be harmful for their self- confidence. We have to contribute to our pupils’ self- confidence good development and their academic possibilities. We have to be careful in this process because we can block pupils’ learning. Their understanding or lack of it can help or make the personality that is being developed, this is why teachers have a lot of responsibility with this point, we have to take care about the images they have from themselves and if this image is from a person capable to achieve academic success because children can have an impression of a person with little value, little skills and possibilities to achieve the aims. The image each child has from himself or herself is influenced and formed through our opinions and the others (classmates) so it is important to be careful with our attitude towards our pupils.
TO BE AN EMOTIONAL TEACHER:
For all we previously said it is very important that school helps the children to discover and to be the people they always wanted to be respecting them. Here is a list of points that future teachers should take into account:
- Be aware that the school can improve or degrade the people in it.
- Adjust the learning opportunities to each pupil, so he/she can progress with their own rhythms.
- Create an environment to find opportunities within it, where each child and feel important and useful.
- Recognize the strengths of each pupil and be sure that kids’ decisions can be overcome with their strengths.
- Be aware of the feelings and images that the children have in their minds when they go to school.
- Understand that sometimes children just advance and develop by approbation, because the critics should wait until the pupil is ready enough to understand and accept them.
- Accept that misbehaviors can appear when children are under big pressures. Transmit faith in every child.
SUGGESTION OF ACTIVITIES: My Body Jigsaw: Children will have to trace a body part outline on butcher paper. Children will cut it out in one piece and glue on to a stiffer paper or cardboard. It can be decorated and then it can cut the puzzle into pieces. My Flag: On a cut flag shape, children will cut out pictures of their favorite foods, animals, toys… They will finally glue on to the flag. Thumbprint Art: Children will create a picture with thumbprints. They will have to roll thumbs in a washable poster paint. One possible caption for it could be the next one: "Made by Thumbody Special"…
INTERESTING RESOURCES: Here I bring you one example of Unit of Work with some activities that we can use to develop emotional skills.
